Community Medicine Birmingham

Community Medicine Birmingham is a grassroots initiative led by Birmingham-based medical herbalists Arlene Burnett and Emma Louise Cowley.

The group promotes health and well-being through herbal medicine, community gardening, educational workshops, herbal clinics, and the arts.

By growing medicinal plants, sharing traditional knowledge, and facilitating creative expression, we reconnect people with land, culture, and one another—cultivating resilience, empowerment, and community-led health.

Community Herbal Medicine Garden

Northleigh Road Allotments B8

The Northleigh Road Community Allotment is our community herbal medicine allotment located in Hodge Hill, Birmingham.

We have taken on a disused, overgrown allotment and are currently developing the site into a fully functioning herbal apothecary using regenerative and environmentally friendly methods.

The project aims to support sustainable growing practices, celebrate herbal traditions, and offer hands-on opportunities for the community, herbal medicine students, and practitioners, while strengthening the role of herbal medicine in the region.

Whats On

We are currently running two sessions a week during winter -

Thursdays 10am - 12 noon

Saturdays 10am - 1pm

During these sessions we plan and create growing spaces, learn about plants and their medicinal uses and just as importantly chat and have a drink together.

People are welcome to attend as they please, there is no pressure to come each week, just attend when it suits you.

There is also  no obligation to garden, you are more than welcome to come along and observe, have a drink and a chat, whatever works for you .

Generously supported by

The Northleigh Road Community Herbal Allotment project has generously been supported by:

The Herbal Medicine Trust who have enabled us to buy essential gardening tools for the gardening sessions, and a shed to shelter from downpours whilst housing reading materials for visitors and participants.

We have also received funding from West Midlands Combined Authority enabling us to create a pond and bog area to attract wildlife, to improve soil health on the plot encouraging healthy plants and reduce potential flooding, and to create a herbal spiral raised bed allowing us to plant more herbs in less space.
